Elder Concerns

Although our main focus at this time is the Adult Day Care, where persons with disabilities can be cared for on a daily basis.  St Mary Magdalen has an active Elder Concerns Ministry.

Some responsibilities in this ministry:

  1. Establish good lines of communication with the parish clergy, pastoral ministers and leaders of service and social groups in parish and community.
  2. To be a resource for elder parishioners and their families.
  3. To promote inclusion of elder parishioners in parish life and ministry.
  4. To be an advocate for the frail and at risk elderly.

How do we do this:

  1. Ministry to the Sick, ministers visit seniors that are in hospitals, nursing homes and in homes often.
  2. Offer opportunities for activities – Wednesday Seniors meet every week in the parish Annex where they take part in activities, food and most of all fellowship. (Do not meet during the summer)
  3. Parish Bulletin has information that might be missed by the senior. Examples below

Pneumonia season is not over!

A new report from the Infectious Disease Society of America has found the millions of older adults go without the Pneumonia vaccination. The CDC recommends everyone 65-plus be vaccinated, although the shot does not work for every type of pneumonia, the vaccination “represents a terrific opportunity  for prevention.

If you have received a pneumonia shot before the age of 65, check with your doctor to find out whether you need a second shot. Information from the AARP Modern Maturity Magazine.
