Who We Are
Having a loved one in prison is hard, but you are not alone.
“Families Ministering to Families” Support Group is for those with a loved
one in prison, on trial, about to be sentenced to prison or on probation.
Why We Exist
"I was in prison and you visited me…" (Matthew 25:36)
Those left behind when a loved one is incarcerated are just as affected as the
inmate themselves. By sharing our stories we can help ease one another’s pain.
When and Where We Meet
Family members meet on the third Saturday morning of each month at St. Mary Magdalen
in the Annex St. Ignatius of Loyola room. Immediately following the 8am Mass (Approximately 8:45am)
How the Ministry Works
We meet monthly to share our stories and our feelings, share pertinent information, and
occasionally have a guest speaker. Our aim is to give each other the strength to function
in a foreign place, to pray for one another, and to help the newly released and their families
assimilate back into the life of the parish and the community as active and welcomed members.
We write letters and send cards to each others’ family members. We also monitor legislation
which affects the criminal justice system. We hope to evenly help in the formation of support
groups throughout the Diocese.
Other Things You Should Know
Confidentiality is a priority.
If you like to visit prisoners who are not your relatives, you need to complete the following:
- Diocesan Fingerprinting clearance
- Diocesan Safety Environment Training completion
- Diocesan Prisoner Contact Training
- The trainings are scheduled for Saturday November 13, 2010 at Nativity and
Saturday January 22, 2011 at St. Peters in Deland.
- For further information contact Tom Gillan at the Chancery (407) 246-4868 or e-mail
