3 - Feast of St. Blaise - AmericanCatholic.org
We know more about the devotion to St. Blase by Christians around the world than
we know about the saint himself. His feast is observed as a holy day in the Eastern
Church. The Council of Oxford, in 1222, prohibited servile labor in England on
Blaise’s feast day. The Germans and Slavs hold him in special honor and for decades
many United States Catholics have sought the annual St. Blase blessing for their

As in the case of Agnes, another virgin-martyr of the early Church, almost nothing
is historically certain about this saint except that she was martyred in Sicily

John Neumann was born in what is now the Czech Republic. After studying in Prague,
he came to New York at 25 and was ordained a priest. He did missionary work in
New York until he was 29, when he joined the Redemptorists and became its first
member to profess vows in the United States. He continued missionary work in Maryland,
Virginia and Ohio, where he became popular with the Germans. To learn

On December 8, 1854, Pope Pius IX proclaimed the dogma of the Immaculate Conception
in the apostolic constitution Ineffabilis Deus. A little more than three years
later, on February 11, 1858, a young lady appeared to Bernadette Soubirous. This
began a series of visions. During the apparition on March 25, the lady identified
herself with the words: “I am the Immaculate Conception.” To learn more

Between May 13 and October 13,
1917, three children, Portuguese shepherds from Aljustrel, received apparitions
of Our Lady at Cova da Iria, near Fatima, a city 110 miles north of Lisbon. At
that time, Europe was involved in an extremely bloody war. Portugal itself was
in political turmoil, having overthrown its monarchy in 1910; the government disbanded

Born in Italy into a large family and baptized Francis, he lost his
mother when he was only four years old. He was educated by the Jesuits and, having
been cured twice of serious illnesses, came to believe that God was calling him
