| The
Intentional Family: Simple Rituals to Strengthen Family Ties -
William J. Doherty, Ph. D.
Today's
family is in crisis. Many diverse factors have combined to weaken its structure
in American society: the conflicting needs and schedules of dual working parents;
the ongoing fragmentation of our civic, cultural, and religious communities; the
prevalence of divorce and remarriage; the advent of technological distractions
like video games and computers. What was once a strong, cohesive unit has become,
in many cases, no more than a loose grouping of individuals with individual timetables
and agendas. However, now more that ever before, we have the freedom to shape
the kind of family we want, rather that an obligation to conform to inflexible
concepts of what a family should be.

| Dear
Heart, Come Home - The Path of Midlife Spirituality - Joyce Rupp
Midlife is more than a crisis. It is a summons to grow and a challenge to change.
Midlife beckons one inward. It is a move to interiority, a passage to the deeper
places where we discover our authenticity, where we realize both our limitations
and our grandeur. It is here that we come home to our truest Self. We take our
external experiences with us to the inside and look at our life. We evaluate our
goals, hopes, dreams, beliefs, behaviors, experiences - all that has marked us
and contributed to the person we have become - and we ask ourselves: "Is this
the person I want to be in the future?"
| Raising
Kids Who Care - About Themselves, About Their World, About Each Other -
Kathleen O'Connell-Chesto Chesto
offers specific ideas and suggestions based on her considerable research, study,
and, best of all, personal experience. Never one to offer glib answers, Chesto
reaches deep to suggest how to lead a child through sibling rivalry, how to deal
with lying as a coping skill, what to do about crises of divorce, sex, and latchkey
situations. "Affluence is placing a great strain on our ability as families to
teach self-sacrifice," says Chesto. "Sharing works best when there is not enough.
. . . A television for every room and separate phone lines may eliminate arguments,
but it also inhibits community and the possibility of learning to live for and
with others. Raising Kids Who Care is a resource for parents and anyone who works
with kids in the skills needed to motivate kids who will care about themselves,
the world they live in, and about the people they encounter in the course of their
daily lives . | |
| Growing
Compassionate Kids - Helping Kids See Beyond Their Backyard -
Jan Johnson Johnson shows parents how to integrate compassion-building
activities into daily family life. She draws from her own experience raising kids
as well as the experience of many others who sought ways to raise kids who care
about others. Johnson says there are many side benefits to involving our children
in compassionate activities, including becoming better parents ourselves. Says
Johnson, "When you're volunteering at a soup kitchen you end up not fussing so
much at your kids. It helps put your priorities in order and theirs, too." She
offers many easy-to-adopt suggestions such as packing lunches for homeless people
before going off on errands so you can hand them out when people ask for spare
change. | |
| More
Than Meets the Eye - Finding God in the Creases of Family Life -
Mary Jo Pedersen, Thomas Greisen, Ronald Wasikowski Is
God's love really present in our lives every moment of the day? You bet! More
Than Meets the Eye will awaken a family's awareness of God in all kinds of places
and common experiences--birthday parties, the laundry, a gravesite, Saturday nights
with Grandma and Grandpa, and more. Real-life stories, along with helpful reflections
and meaningful rituals, evoke the feelings, thoughts, memories, and associations
that provide a recognition of God in family life. An outline of the reflection
process helps individuals, families, or groups of families delve deeper into their
own stories to find a loving and merciful God within them. |
| | What
Kids Really Want That Money Can't Buy by Betsy
Taylor This book arrives at just the right moment for parents worried
that they are raising the "I want" generation. Taylor's advice ranges from simple,
everyday things parents can do to more sophisticated approaches, such as teaching
media literacy and financial skills to their children to fight this problem. Along
the way, she enlists the voices and stories of parents and educators on the front
line in this "war" against consumerism. She also promotes the philosophy of how
to have "more fun" with "less stuff" by returning to simple and meaningful rituals
like dinner conversation and nature outings. Striving toward a life in which the
"hand, heart, and homemade" is highly valued, this inspirational guide from Betsy
Taylor offers a much needed helping hand. |
